The problem: partial discharges

Perhaps you have also experienced a failure of a T-connector or a sleeve at some point. Your solar PV system, wind turbine or even wind farm is no longer able to feed electricity into the grid. In many cases, this sudden failure could have been prevented.

Damage to T-joints and sleeves is often caused by partial discharges. With ACOUSTISCAN, such damage can be detected at an early stage and rectified as part of a planned repair programme.

  • What are partial discharges?

    Partial discharges are minute electrical discharges occurring within or on the surface of insulating materials in high-voltage installations. They occur when the local electric field strength is so high that it partially breaks down the material – without causing a complete short circuit.

    Why is this important?
    These micro-discharges are early indicators of insulation damage. If they go undetected, they can lead to material degradation, malfunctions and, ultimately, costly breakdowns.

    Common causes:

    • Air pockets or voids in the insulation material
    • Sharp edges or dirt
    • Ageing and exposure to moisture

    Early detection protects:
    Through continuous monitoring – for example, using acoustic sensors such as those in ACOUSTISCAN – partial discharges can be detected at an early stage, thereby preventing unplanned downtime.

The solution: Continuous acoustic monitoring

ACOUSTISCAN detects partial discharges acoustically – without electrical coupling and whilst the operating voltage is applied. Measurement data is transmitted securely and analysed by our electrical engineers.
